Used with Leksell Stereotactic System® or Leksell® Vantage™ Stereotactic System and enables safe puncturing of intracranial cavities. The insertion needle diameter is 2.1 mm accommodating catheter diameters of 1.5 mm.
All the components of the Catheter Insertion Needle Kits are made of stainless steel, with the exception of the guide insert and the stop insert, which are made of plastic and the ruler which is aluminum.
Technique
Each instrument set consists of four parts: an outer cannula with an open slit along its full length, an inner cannula, a close fitting stylet and a bayonet-shaped ruler. After trepanation and by standard stereotactic technique, the target is approached with the instrument with all the component parts assembled. The length of the introduced part of the instrument, up to the surface of the skin, is then measured using the ruler, allowing the desired length of the catheter to be determined. The stylet is withdrawn, allowing flow of abscess contents (if applicable) through the inner cannula.
Finally, the inner cannula is replaced by the catheter, introduced to its full predetermined length. Using a small hook or other delicate instrument, the catheter is held in position while the outer cannula is withdrawn.
Thanks to the slit, this manoeuvre can be easily performed without changing the position of the catheter.
